Philippe Lane

Philippe Lane has been Professor Emeritus at the University of Rouen Normandy since March 2020, after a career combining academic and diplomatic positions. From 2016 to 2020, he was a first-class university professor of French linguistics (Professeur des universités de 1re classe) and Vice-President for International Relations at the University of Rouen Normandy. From 2012 to 2016, he was seconded to the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs as Counsellor for Cooperation and Cultural Action at the French Embassy in Jordan and Director of the French Institute in Jordan. Before that, from 2008 to 2012, he was University Cooperation Attaché at the French Embassy in the United Kingdom.

He has also held academic positions abroad, notably as a Visiting Professor at the University of Cambridge from 2009 to 2011, where he taught courses and seminars on French cultural and scientific diplomacy.

Philippe Lane has extensive experience in French linguistics, cultural and scientific diplomacy and international relations. At the University of Rouen, he held positions of responsibility including Vice-President for International Relations from 2000 to 2008 and Director of the Centre d’Enseignement à Distance and of the Département des Sciences du Langage et de la Communication. He also worked as a lecturer in Communication Sciences at the University of Paris Nord.

He is the author of several publications on cultural and scientific diplomacy, including “French Presence in the World, Cultural and Scientific Action” and “French Cultural and Scientific Diplomacy”. He has also contributed to collective works and served on scientific committees.

More recently, his activities have included sitting on thesis juries, supervising doctoral theses and contributing to the project on the history of the Institut français as part of its centenary in 2022.
