My Story
Mérouane Debbah is a renowned researcher, educator, and technology entrepreneur. He currently holds the position of a full professor at CentraleSupélec and serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence. Throughout his career, Debbah has made significant contributions to the fields of telecommunications and artificial intelligence (AI).
Debbah has a diverse background in both academia and industry. He has founded several public and industrial research centers and start-ups, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit. Presently, he holds the position of Chief Researcher at the Technology Innovation Institute in Abu Dhabi, further highlighting his involvement in cutting-edge research.
As a prominent figure in his field, Debbah is frequently invited to be a keynote speaker at international events, where he shares his expertise and insights on topics related to telecommunication and AI.
Debbah’s research work revolves around the intersection of fundamental mathematics, algorithms, statistics, and information and communication sciences. He has made notable contributions in areas such as random matrix theory and learning algorithms. In the field of communication, he has been instrumental in the development of technologies like small cells (4G), Massive MIMO (5G), and Large Intelligent Surfaces (6G). In the AI domain, his work focuses on distributed AI systems for networks and semantic communication.
Throughout his career, Debbah has received numerous accolades and distinctions for his significant contributions to both the fields of telecommunications and AI.
Starting from his educational journey, Mérouane Debbah completed his high school education at Lycée Cheikh Bouamama in Algeria. He then pursued further studies at Lycée Henri IV in Paris, where he completed his classes préparatoires. Following that, he gained admission to the prestigious École normale supérieure Paris-Saclay in 1996, where he eventually obtained his Ph.D. degree in 2002. His doctoral research focused on leveraging a mathematical framework called free probability theory for designing wireless networks.
Debbah initiated his professional career at Motorola Labs in Saclay in 1999. He later joined the Telecommunication Research Center in Vienna as a senior researcher. From 2003 to 2007, he served as an assistant professor at Eurecom in Sophia-Antipolis. During this period, he dedicated his work to the mathematical foundations of communication networks, employing techniques such as random matrix theory and game theory in the context of signal processing and wireless communications.
In 2007, Debbah’s outstanding expertise led to his appointment as a full professor at CentraleSupélec, situated in Gif-sur-Yvette, France. Simultaneously, he founded and directed the Alcatel-Lucent chair on Flexible Radio, which fostered collaboration between CentraleSupélec and Bell Labs. This pioneering industrial chair focused on the development of small cells and Massive MIMO technologies. Additionally, it played a crucial role in training top scientists, producing numerous Ph.D. and post-doctoral researchers who have become leaders in the wireless communication field. Under Debbah’s leadership, the telecommunication department of CentraleSupélec gained recognition as the top-ranked department in France and the second-ranked department in Europe by 2017.
In 2014, Debbah joined Huawei and established the Huawei Mathematical and Algorithmic Sciences Lab in Boulogne-Billancourt. The lab emphasized mathematical sciences applied to wireless, optical, and networking communications. By the end of 2019, the lab grew to comprise more than 200 researchers and became one of the leading global hubs for industrial research and development in the field of communication networks.
